Lack Of Classes Affecting Students

By Tatiana Miranda
On July 19, 2013

There is a calming silence on the California State University, Los Angeles campus this summer with a small student presence for the summer quarter. Despite the small student population this summer, the few that are on attending classes are delving right into Week 4 and are preparing for summer midterms. Even though summer quarter is well on its way to the midway point, there is still frustration and discouragement lingering among students regarding and the lack of classes that were made available this year for the Summer session.

Crashing courses was the only way some could get the classes they absolutely needed according to 19 year old Television, Film, and Media (TVF) student, Katherine Barrera who was lucky enough to land three summer classes. Two of the classes she is enrolled in are General Education courses, Math 102 and English 102. "In each class there was at least seven people trying to add for my Math and for my English." According to Barrera, only about three students were able to add. Some students just gave up on trying to add and the others were unable to add due to the enrollment cap."

Some students were lucky to get classes that they needed, but some students were unable to take classes all together. 20 year old student, Ryan Bravo did not enroll in classes for the summer session for the first time since he began at Cal State L.A. "I only need five more classes to graduate - I got ahead in my units early on. Only one class that I needed was offered out of that five." The one class the Bravo did need for his degree in TVF was full at the time of his registration. "In a sense, it feels a little degrading and unjust because any student - whether at this university or not - goes to college to get a higher education...Seeing as universities are unable to provide the most basic necessities - which is a class, what we're here to do - it's a little disheartening because I've met former students who have dropped out because of it."

With minimal classes being made available in each College, sections, and times in which classes are held is affecting the progress of students on their road to graduation.

With so few options for the students at Cal State L.A., the question becomes "How are we going to graduate on time?"
